America’s Startling Figures
By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright.
A DECREASE of 14 per cent, in marriages has been caused by a Michigan law which requires five days’ notice before a licence can be obtained. This indicates that quite a number of people, if they don’t get married in haste, don’t get married at all. The position in the United States is that there is one divorce to every 6.22 marriages.
Received 9.5 a.m. WASHINGTON, Wednesday. \ N analysis of the figures of 23 States indicates that divorce is increasing in the United States. There is one divorce to every 6.22 marriages in the States whose figures are examined, compared with one divorce to every 7.25 marriages in the preceding year. Numerous Paris divorces not in-
eluded in the survey would considerably increase the figures. Michigan’s new law, requiring five days’ notice before marriage licences are issued, is credited with causing a 14 per cent, decrease in the marriages, while the new law in Nebraska, modifying the requirements for taking out a licence, is credited with causing a 19 per cent, increase in marriages.— A. and N.Z.
