SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY
RESEARCH WORK FINALISING PROGRAMME (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, "Wednesday. Progress in the application of science to industry, so far as New Zealand is concerned, was mentioned todayl by Mr. G. Shirtcliffe, chairman of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. There appears to be every hope of a comprehensive scheme for research into fuel resources and products being inaugurated through the co-operation of mineowners, and. with the assistance of the Mines Department, he said, and it is anticipated that the programme of work will be finalised at an early date. The New Zealand Romney Sheep Breeders’ Association had made a generous financial offer for the purpose of inaugurating research with a view to improving the quality of New Zealand wool. From observations so far made into the manufacturing industries of the Dominion there appeared the significant fact that a very real measure of assistance can be given by co-opera-tive scientific effort in conjunction with the technical officers of the department working at the Dominion laboratorq. He also mentioned that arrangements had been made for investigation into the food of fishes on the New Zealand coasts. This work would be done by Mr. H. J. Findlay, with the co-opera-tion of Mr. Hefford, chief of the Fisheries Department, Great good was likely to emerge from the close association of the New Zealand and Australian research bodies.
