SYDNEY H. BERNARD WINS

Pictures of ‘‘Old Ironsides"

MEARLY fifty type- “ writer experts made pictures of “Old Ironsides” and submitted them to THE HUN’S “Newsograph” competition. The judge, Miss Alice H. G. Basten, has made the following awards: — First prize of JE3 3s, given by the management of the New Regent Theatre, Mr. Sydney H. Bernard, Rewa Road, Mount Eden. Second prize of £2 2s, given by THE SUN, Mr. C. L. Grouden, 56 Munroe Street, Napier. Six consolation prizes of 10s 6d each, given by Paramount Pictures, Ltd., Miss K. Hider, Allen Street, Frankton Junction ; Miss Sybil Waddel,

38 Lincoln Street, Ponsonby; Miss A. C. Cole, Brain’s Commercial College; Miss B. Rees, 61 Brighton Road, Parnell; Miss M. Williams, 89 Ponsonby Road; Miss Sybil Waddel, 38 Lincoln Street, Ponsonby. “ Strange to say,” says Miss Alice Basten, “the truest to design were, for the most part, those which displayed the most ingenious treatment with the typewriter.” After she had made a selection she had consulted with Mr. H. Winkleman, the specialist in boat photography. Vibrant With Life The winning picture by Mr. Sydney H. Bernard, was by far the most original and artistic treatment of the subject. As may be seen from the reproduction, it is a sketch of merit, comparing

with the work of an artist with the simpler mediums of pen and pencil. The “Old Ironsides” he has made is vibrant with life as she leans over to a stiff following wind. The competition was a hard one. It was a difficult task to do away with the artificial appearance. The fault of most of the designs was that they tried to follow the design of the photograph without using the sense of imagination which is necessary to all art.

By far the largest number of entrants were girls, but two men were placed in the two first positions. The entries came from every suburb of Auckland and from many outside towns like Napier, Frankton Junction, Hamilton, Marton, Te Aroha, Henderson, Rotorua and Wanganui.
