“GREATEST LIVING BRITISH STATESMAN!"
LORD BALFOUR EULOGISED DR. A. GOLDSTEIN’S TRIBUTE “THE greatest living itatesmim in Britain to-day,” was now Dr. Alexander Goldstein, the Zionist envoy, referred to Lord Balfour. author of the famous Balfour Declaration with reference to Palestine, at a crowded meeting last night at Scots Hall, The ideal of his race to return to their ancient home was emphasised by Dr. Goldstein, who incidentally paid a tribute to the efforts of Great Britain in befriending the Jews and assisting them to return to Palestine. Dr. Goldstein mentioned how Palestine bordered the Suez Canal, the artery of the whole British Empire. Jews would always remember, he said, that If it had not been for British soldiers, statesmen and money, there would have been no new Judea. The revival of the ancient language of his people was also commented
ipon by Dr. Goldstein, who said that Palestine of to-day was a living illuaration of the Bible. “There is one insoluble tie between the Jews and the other peoples of the world. The Jew« gave the world the Bible. The Christian religion did not come from the forums of Rome nor the glorious pantheons of Greece. It came from the rugged hills of Judea and its teachers were Jews.” Professor H. W. Segar proposed a rote of thanks to Dr. Goldstein (or iis address, which was seconded by Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M. To-night Dr. Goldstein will be the guest of honour at a farewell functioa given by the Auckland Hebrew community at the Jewish Club. HU mission will be continued in Welling:on, after a brief stay in Rotorua.
