GOOD SPORT AT TRENTHAM

AUCKLAND CANDIDATES PROMINENT SEVERAL OUTSIDERS SCORE 'pHE winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club opened at Trentham to-day under most favourable auspices, a fine day following a stormy twenty-four hours. The going was heavy, and there were several falls in the jumping contests, but no one was much the worse. A feature of the racing was the prominent showing of the Aucklanders, Beau Cavalier and Kawini in the steeplechase, the Northerners finishing first and second. That speculation was brisk was demonstrated by the return of £42,524 10s for the day, compared with £42,940 on the first day last year.

The Wellington Steeplechase was a particularly tine race, all except Comical (pulled up) completing the course. Beau Cavalier repeated his Great Northern Steeplechase form, winning easily from another Aucklander, Ka-Wharnc-liffe sprang a. mild surprise in the Trentham Hurdles, in which Royal Form can be accounted unlucky. Bonena ran quite a tine race in the Hack Hurdles, and he proved himself a bit above the company he defeated. The versatile Nukumai accounted for the Whyte Memorial in convincing style, and incidentally returned a big price. Double-figure dividends of substantial proportions were also returned by Horomea and Lady Limond. PLEASING PERFORMANCE Five withdrawals from the opening event, the Vittoria Hurdles, left a field of 13, and most money was forthcoming for Potoanui £772 and Bonena £660, with several others evenly backed. Disasters came early in the race, Guncase cannoning into Hyama at the first fence, and the latter was sent flying. Guncase was in chafge lead-

ing past the stands, where Mount Marta lost his rider, the order behind the leader being Peshwa,. Potoanui, Aberfeldy, Ramblin’ Kid and Bonena, with Perle do Leon and Gauntlet well back already. Running into. the back stretch Bonena took charge, soon to be joined by Ivaikahu, and also handy were Guncase, Potoanua and Peshwa. Into the straight Bonena led Kaika.hu, Peshwa, Potoanui and Ramblin’ Kid. Nothing troubled Bonena in the run home and the Southerner won by a couple of lengths from Kaikahu. Vexatious finished well a neck away just in front of Potoanui. There was daylight back to Guncase, and then came Perle de Leon, Aberfeldy, Ramblin’ Kid and Lord Star. Peshwa fell at the last fence. FILLY’S SURPRISE Twenty-one came out for the Trial Plate, and in a good pool, Avro £ 922, Arikiwai £709, and the Merry MintQuantum bracket £533, were the best 1 backed. The favourite began well from the inside position, while Romantic appeared to dwell. Merry Mint took charge after the field had gone a couple of furlongs, and the youngster piloted the way into the straight, being attended by Avro, Propeller, Waltzer, Catkin and Lady Limond. The leader was beaten at the false rail, where Avro was clear. The favourite looked a good thing a furlong from home, but lie began to stop. Then Lady Limond put in her claim and revelling in the going she got up to win by two lengths from Merry Mint, with Avro a length and a-half away third. Waltzer ran a good race into fourth place and then came Romantic, Catapult, Aro de Val and Catkin. WON ALL THE WAY There was very little of interest in the Hack Steeplechase as a race. Banjuke wound up a good favourite with £9Ol, against Woden’s £784, and Hokioi’s £763. From the start Maidos went to the lead to the first fence, where he stumbled, and lost his rider. Banjuke was left in the van and he was never afterwards seriously troubled. Up the straight the first time lie was attended by Comedy Prince, Taitaiata, Hokioi, The Curragh and Woden, the last-named quickly tailing off. Along the back Taitaiata and then Comedy Prince fell, Banjuke leading into the straight well clear of Hokioi. Banjuke went on to win by eight lengths. Kirkwood was 15 lengths away, and The Curragh was a long way backfourth. THE FAVOURITE WINS A big field contested the Stewards’ Handicap, Delightment £822, King Lu £746, and Arpent £622 being entrusted with most money. The start was a good one, Gaillard’s colours near the rails being the first picked up in front of the bunch. At the end of the first two furlongs Gaillard. Royal Game, Lady fingers, Nadarino. Gold Box and Delightment were prominent, and there was little between this sextette as they turned into the straight. There Delightment shot through, and he was clear at the false rail. The favourite appeared as if he was going to romp home, but he was challenged over the last bit by Solrose.

while King Lu and Hipo were putting in some good work. An exciting finish saw Solrose just fail to catch Delightment, the favourite getting the decision by a head. It was a very close call for the Aucklander. King Lu was a length and a-half away third, just in front of Hipo, who showed surprising dash over the last furlong. Ladyfingers, Nadarino, Gold Box and Deluge were next to cross the line. BEAU CAVALIER EASILY The defections of Peter Maxwell and Cartoon still left 15 starters for the Wellington Steeplechase, and Kawini was made favourite with £1,029, while there was good support forthcoming for Beau Cavalier £862, Crown Coin £7BO, Tuki £6IS and Scamp £589. The race was a splendid one all the way. Beau Cavalier got a moving start and afterwards he only lost the lead for a furlong, when Comical headed him up the straight the first time. Comical was a length in front of Beau Cavalier, following being Scamp, Zircon, Sir Wai, Kawini, Crown Coin, Royal Abbey and Sanforte, the last pair being Wedding March and Dick.

A bad jump at the double brush by Comical gave Beau Cavalier the lead again, and they presented a fine sight as they travelled along the back at intervals of a length or so. Beau Cavalier was still bowling along in the van passing the stands the second time, Zircon and Kawini lying next with Scamp, Crown Coin, Comical, Sir Wai, Bonny Rill and Wedding March in that order. At the back stretch it was obvious that the issue lay between Beau Cavalier, Kawini and Crown Coin, there being little between the trio five furlongs from home; but here Henderson stole a march and quickly increased his advantage, leading into the straight six lengths ahead of the next pair, with Scamp, Zircon, Dick, Tuki and Bonny Rill next. Beau Cavalier went on to win easing up by eight lengths from Kawini, who was two lengths ahead of Crown Coin. Tuki finished on well in fourth place, and then at intervals came Dick, Bonny Rill, Zircon, Omahu, Royal Abbey, Wedding March, Sir Wai, Sanforte and Scamp. Comical pulled up early in the final round. ONE FOR THE SOUTH A field of eight contested the Trentham Hurdles, and Royal Form, £1,122, was made a hot favourite, with Brigadier Bill, £ 857, second choice. Kamehameha set out to win all the way, leading up the straight the first time from Royal Form and Rahepoto. with San Pedro, Captain Sarto, Brigadier Bill, Koauau and Wharncliffe following. Along the back the favourite lost ground, and Kamehameha led into the home stretch from Brigadier Bill, San Pedro, Wharncliffe and Royal Form. The last two made up a lot of ground here, and they were first over the final obstacle, the favourite muddling his jump, and Wharncliffe went on to win by four lengths from Royal Form. Brigadier Bill was two lengths away, and next in order were San Pedro, Kamehameha, Captain Sarto, Rahepoto and Koauau. NUKUMAI’S BIG DIVIDEND Master Doon £905, Sun Up £686, Black Mint £589 and Alloway £527 were the best backed in the Whyte Memorial, which was productive of an interesting race, ending in a big surprise. At the start, Fairy Herald was hopelessly left, and Huikai dwelt. Sun Up began very smartly, and was followed out by Tresham, Master Doon, Alloway, Miss Hupana, Nukumai, Indian Sage, Royal Mint and Rouex. At the half-mile Sun Up was making play from Master Doon, Miss Hupana, Indian Sage and Nukumai. There was little between the two first-named, as the field ran into the straight, Indian Sage lying in behind them, and Nukumai, Rouex, Royal Mint, Alloway and Merry Damon following in that order. The leaders compounded at the distance, where there was a bunch, and it was Nukumai that shot out, and he went on to win comfortably by three lengths, from Queen Arch, who made a last-minute dash on the inner. Indian Sage was only a neck away, just in front of Merry Damon, after which came Royal Mint, Alloway, Black Mint and Master Doon. There was only £135 invested on the winner and £152 on the second horse. HCROMEA’S SURPRISE Nineteen paraded for the concluding event, the Te Aro Handicap, and once again backers were hopelessly astray in their reckoning. Mister Gamp, £1,064, was backed down to a cramped price, but there were others befriended, notably the Piperenzo—Thurnus bracket, and the Te Kawana- Royal Head' bracket, with £615 and £592 respectively. At the start Thurnus got hung up in the tapes, and lost some ground. Waicullus, Horomea, Cerf, Denier, Te Kawana and Bronstell’ was the order in which they left the barrier, but with

three furlongs covered. Denier and Te Kawana were out in the van, making the pace. They were still together when the field swept into the straight, Bronstell, Rowley, Cerf, Horomea and Waicullus being next in order. Te Kawana easily disposed of Denier then, and was called upon to keep off Rowley and Horomea, a ding-dong battle resulting in Horomea getting a head verdict over Rowley, with Te Kawana a length and a-half away. Cerf was fourth, and Denier, Thurnus and Waicullus next. Te Kawana was squeezed out badly at the finish.
