United States Earnest In Enforcing Prohibition
80,000 ARRESTS IN YEAR By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. ALL smuggling of liquor to the United States has been sharply curtailed, says the following cablegram from Washington. That may well be, for the message reports that during the year ended in June the arrests reached the stupendous figure of 80,000.
Reed. 9.5 a.m. WASHINGTON, Tues. A SURVEY of the prohibition activities for the year ended July 1 has revealed a paradox. More persons and boats and automobiles were seized, but actually less liquor was captured than in the preceding year. The arrests numbered 80,000, which is a new record, being 20,000 above the figure for the previous year. Two thousand five hundred gallons of liquor were seized, only a small per-
centage of which was of the genuine importation. The sentences of the convicted persons averaged 140 days’ gaol, and 15u dollars was the average fine. Several large liquor rings were broken up, but others were formed to replace them. Illicit stills are reported to be Increasing, also home-brewing and winemaking, but all smuggling, except that from Canada, has been sharply curtailed.—A. and N.Z.
