PROSECUTOR’S RIGHTS

CHALLENGING OF JURORS MR. HOLLAND’S AMENDMENT (THE SUX’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. Amendments to the Crimes Act, as far as it relates to challenges of jurors, are sought by Mr. H. E. Holland, Leader of tlie Opposition, who has given notice to introduce an amending Bill to repeal sub-sections 9 and 10 of section 421 of the Crimes Act, 1908. The sections which Mr. Holland wishes to repeal provide that the Crown prosecutor may direct any number of jurors, not peremptorily challenged by either party, to stand aside until all the jurors have been called who are available for the purpose of trying that indictment; and that the accused may be called upon to declare whether he challenges any juror before the Crown prosecutor is called upon to declare his intention. Mr. Holland has withdrawn his notice to introduce the Juries Amendment Bill.
