CLOSING DENTAL CLINIC
The Dental Clinic Committee met in Taumaraunui on Saturday evening, those present being Messrs. Waller (Ngakonui), Gerke fTunakotekotej, Carroll (Manunui), Bradley (Hikimutu), Driffll, Ward and Reed (Taumarunui) and Gardner (Ongarue). Advice was received from Mr. T. A. Hunter, Director of the Division of Dental Hygiene, to the effect that it had been decided to close the full-time clinic, as there was not a sufficient number of children within workable distance to warrant its continuance. It was expected that arrangements would be made for a dental nurse to visit the district later and carry out necessary work. Nurse Houston reported to the committee that there were about 400 children available, and that between 800 and 1,000 was a fair number to treat. It was resolved to protest strongly against the department’s action, on the grounds that the organisation had not yet had a chance to become operative, and that the closing of the clinic would entail undue hardship on the country schools. A schedule is to be prepared for each school in the district, showing the numbers of children eligible for treatment.
