FIJI FOOTBALLERS VARSITY CLUB SURPRISED PROGRAMME ARRANGED AFTER going to a great deal of trouble to arrange a programme for the visitors, the members of the Auckland University Rugby Club were surprised, on Friday, to receive a cable informing them that the Fiji team expected in would not be able to get away. The programme drawn up to cover a brief tour by the Fiji players included matches at Dargaville, Rotorua, Matamata, Te Awamutu, and Auckland. Both local matches were to have been staged at Eden Park, one as a curtain-raiser to the match against Hawke’s Bay. The tour had been arranged as a return for the visit paid to Fiji by the University team last season. The sudden cancellation of the arrangements will make Rugby unions very shy about making engagements with a Fiji team in the future. As far as is known the reason for the cancellation is the inability or several leading players to travel. Further details are expected by mail. 20-MILE CYCLE RACE POSTPONED OTHER EVENTS HELD COURSE UNDER WATER • Owing to heavy rains on Saturday afternoon the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club found it necessary to postpone the big event of the day, the 20-mile cycle road race.
