EXPLOSION IN GRATE

SHOWER OF BURNING COAL Press Association. + WELLINGTON, Sunday. An explosion similar to that which occurred in Parliament Buildings yesterday morning took place in the afternoon in a private home. A coal tire was burning in the grate of the dining-room of a house occupied by Mr. W. Parke, Kilbirnie, when a violent explosion occurred. Pieces of burning coal flew in ail directions and the room was filled instantly with a cloud of acrid smoke and soot. A little girl was the only person in the room at the time, and in her fright she buried her head in the cushions of the sofa and escaped injury. Her mother rushed from the next room, and. groping her way through the smoke, picked the child up and carried her out. When the room was cleared of smoke the walls showed signs of contact with burning coals, and the carpet suffered to some extent. Presumably the explosion was due to h. detonator that remained unexploded during blasting operations in the mine.
