NELSON’S FLAGSHIP
Another £IO,OOO will be required before the restoration of Nelson’s ship Victory can be completed. Professor Geoffrey Callender, of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, secretary of the Society for Nautical Research, gives details of the great task.
Victory’s Hull, he said, has been almost entirely reconstructed. The oak, which was once sheathed in copper, was so spongy that there were places where one could put one’s hand through.
“Now the hull is held up by a huge cradle of steel. A concrete wall is being built under the keel, with arches in it, so that the public can walk under the vessel and look up at its massive timbers.
“If it were not for the great help l eceived from the King, especially in presenting his model, it would have been almost impossible to get the exact details.”
