WAIKATO NOTES

LYCEUM CLUB BIRTHDAY The gathering on Monday evening was perhaps the most entertaining and successful that has been held at the Lyceum Club, the occasion being the club’s first birthday party. Indeed, it was a very happy function, the time being passed in games and competitions, keeping everyone amused and interested. There were about 200 members present, including many from outlying districts.

Mrs. Douglas, president, was untiring in her efforts for the comfort and pleasure of the guests, and in a brief speech greeted the members. Mrs. E. R. Lee, of Cambridge, then presented Mrs. Douglas, on behalf of the Cambridge members, with a beautiful ebony bowl as a birthday present to the club.

The birthday cake, beautifully decorated, bearing one candle, was then cut by Mrs Douglas. Prior to the cutting of the cake, Mrs. H. J. Greenslade, on behalf of the committee, presented Mrs. Douglas with a silver cake-knife, and a dainty posy of flowers made by Mrs. D. Seymour. The room looked particularly pretty, arranged with Iceland poppies, delphiniums and pink blossoms, which was the work of Mrs. Gillies, while Mrs. Vere Chitty, Mrs. W. H. Stevens and Mrs. M. Bell were responsible for the dainty supper. The evening was brought to a close by the singing of ■“God Save the King.”
