ENTRANCE EXAM FOR LAND AGENTS
TIGHTENING UP PROFESSION
MEMBERSHIP OF INSTITUTE To raise the standard of the profession of real estate, and to ensure that practising agents will be conversant with commercial and land laws, the New Zealand Institute of Real Estate, founded an entrance examination last year. . , About 130 candidates sat, including 14 from the Auckland Province, and these latter passed, and were granted associate membership of the institute. Candidates are set three papers, one of two hours and two of three, by Mr. .T M. Paterson, M.A., LL,B„ lecturer in law at Otago University. These are to test their knowledge of the Land Agents’ Act and regulations, the rights and duties of land agents, agreements for sale and purchase, the Town Planning Act, land tenures and tenFiftv per cent, of the total marks allotted to each paper entitle candidates to a pass. The Auckland Institute has made arrangements for candidates to be lectured by Professor Algie, of Auckland University, for the next examination, which takes place in September. The president of the Auckland Institute Mr. P. J. Crumb, said to-day that not only the young men in the profession were sitting for the examination, but many of the principals in local firms.. Though anyone might obtain a land agent’s license, it was intended that the entrance examination would be compulsory for membership of the institute.
