ELECTORAL CHANGES
MR LEE MAKES PROTEST AMENDMENT TO ACT SOUGHT (THE SUM'S Parliamentary Repo, ter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Amendments to the Electoral Act, consequent upon the Auckland East trouble, are sought by Mr. J. A. Lee. who is to ask the Minister in Charge of the Electoral Department whether he Till amend the Acts relating to the redistribution of electoral boundaries to provide that no petition objecting to new boundaries shall be considered until the petition has been advertised or gazetted, so that electors and interested parties may present counterpetitions, or submit counter evidence. This procedure, said Mr. Lee, would prevent interested parties from bringing pressure upon the commissioners ■vithout the community being informed, as has occurred in Auckland East during the last few days.
Mr. Lee will also ask the Minister whether he believes the action of the boundary commissioners in deleting from Auckland East electorate about 30 houses of the Newmarket Borough, whereas all the rest of the borough is still left in Auckland East is in accord with the principle of community of interest. The people of Newmarket Borough had been in one electorate for five elections without protest until interested parties took action.
