| AUCKLANDERS ARE NOT PURCHASING HIGH-PRICED PICTURES AT ANNUAL SHOW FEW SALES RECORDED To date Aucklanders have not taken the hint conveyed to them by the president of the Society of Arts, Mr. A. S. Boyd, on opening night at the annual exhibition. So far the sales have'' been poor and disappointing. There is yet time, however, for citizens to show their practical interest in art and our painters as suggested by Mr. Boyd. An interesting sale is that of A. J. Brown’s “Titirangi,” one of the best water-colours on view, and the artist’s sole contribution to this show. The purchase price of £l2 12s should be entirely satisfactory to the new owner. “Approaching Rain,” by J. L. Palethorpe, has also been sold. The price was five guineas. Other sales include “A Bend of the Road,” by Ethel B. Caulier (£4 10s); •‘Roses,” by Alice F. White (£l2 12s); “A Glimpse from the Hill,” by I. G. Eise (£4 10s); and “Alfred Street" Auckland.” by Ella Spicer (£8 8s). A cheap sale was Connie Lloyd’s lea Trees” (etching) for thirty shillings. Miss Lloyd, by the way, correctly referred to her subject as “tea trees.” and did not fall into the common error of calling them "ti” trees. Miss L. O. Haynes’s hand-painted china bowl was sold for £lO 10s. None of the high-priced pictures has found purchasers. Among these, I P.? 4 ?; i s Linle >' Richardson’s “Cynthia’s Birthday, for which the Wellington „ asks the astounding sum of fur 0 ’ Someh °w I do not think it will find a permament home in Auckland —ERIC RAMSDEN.
