PARNELL ELECTORATE A “DRY” AREA

ALTERED BOUNDARIES COURSE-BOOTHS PROBLEM (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The North Island Representation Commission met to-day to consider objections which have been lodged to the readjustment of the electoral boundaries consequent on the distribution of the poulation revealed by the census of last year. The new boundaries for the Parnell electorate fixed by the commission have not affected any of the hotel licences in that district as the hotels have been left in local areas where licence is still in force. Within the new Parnell electorate, however, there is not a single hotel, and, consequently, there is no necessity for the appointment of a licensing committee. This being so, there is no authority to grant the temporary booth licences for the races at Ellerslie and the trotting meetings at Alexandra Park, which are in Parnell electorate. To overcome the difficulty it has been suggested that a slight alteration in the boundary in Newmarket should be made so that the Royal George Hotel will be left in the electorate. The exexistence of even one hotel will necessitate the appointment of a licensing committee, and this committee will have the authority required to issue the temporary permits for the racecourse booths.
