GOOD SAMARITAN STORY NOT BELIEVED
THEFT OF SHIP’S STORES Press Association. WELLINGTON, Monday. A quantity of ship’s stores were found iri the bags of Hugh Gribble, aged 47, and James Hughes, 32, chief, and second cook, respectively, of the S.S. Kauri, when they were accosted on the wharf on Saturday. They were charged at the Wellington Police Court to-day with theft.
Counsel for the two accused pleaded that they were taking the stores ashore to friends living in straightened circumstances. The magistrate imposed a fine of £ 5 each, in default 14 days’ gaol.
