2YA to be Heard Next Saturday

NEW WELLINGTON STATION THE OFFICIAL OPENING It is now officially announced that the new Wellington station, 2YA, will be opened on Saturday, July 16, at 8 p.m. In the progressive development of radio-broadcasting in New Zealand, Wellington has been marking time, pending the construction of the new 2YA. As a consequence, the effective radius of what has been really a temporary or make-shift station has been limited and its area of national service restricted. With the opening of the new station, not only will this disability be removed, but the voice of Wellington will be heard over all the Pacific.

In this connection, the Broadcasting Company is to be complimented on its graceful recognition of two organisations which during the period of small things did not hesitate to give of their best to a comparatively limited audience—the Wellington City Salvation Army Citadel Band and Wellington Municipal Tramways Band. Both of these will be heard in the excellent programme arranged for the opening night.

Under the direction of Mr. Temple White, one of the foremost musical authorities in the country, a fine combination of talent has been arranged for on the opening programme. In addition to the two bands, there are to be other instrumentalists present. They will play some of the richest gems of classical melody. Vocal items include the popular “Waiata Maori.” Even users of the simpler sets should be able to receive this station, as 2YA will be using a power of 5,000 watts output. This is almost three times that of the A class Australians heard in New Zealand. Some enthusiastic crystal users are overhauling their sets

and are determined to do their best to pick up the opening programme. The Prime Minister, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, will perform the formal opening ceremony. He will be assisted by the Postmaster-General, the Hon. W. Nosworthy, and Mr. G. A. Troup, Mayor of Wellington.
