DEVONPORT FIRE ALARMS
The automatic electric fire alarm system, installed at Devonport. was officially inspected by the Mayor and borough councillors last evening. The new system is of the “duplex” type, and 35 allc boxes, similar to those in use in the city, have been installed under the direction of Mr. G. Porter, who devised the system. He explained to the official visitors the methods of receiving alarms in the station, and the “duplex” checking method by which any fault in the w iring circuits of the alarm system are instantly recorded also. Demonstrations of these actual happenings were given.
The Mayor, Mr. E. Aklridge, thanked Mr. Porter for his courtesy, and expressed the relief felt in the borough that a proper system of fire alarm had at last been achieved.
At the request of Superintendent H. E. Follas, of the brigade, the Mayor undertook to have the council consider the erection of a tower for convenience of drying hose and on top of which an electrically-operated bell could be placed, so as to call up the firemen when wanted, the brigade being a vounteer organisation.
The borough engineer estimated the cost of the Lower at £IBO.
