FIJI’S TRADE

COMMERCE WITH N.Z. NEGOTIATIONS DISCUSSED Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. During a call, while en route to Samoa on June 18, the Hon. W. Nosworthy was met at Suva, Fiji, by the Chamber of Commerce and entertained at luncheon. The president. Sir Maynard Hedstrom, that the business community welcomed the opportunity to bring before a member of the New Zealand Government their desire for the closest trade relations. He was’ very much concerned to find the balance of trade enormously in favour of Fiji. They were most anxious to correct this adverse balance. Formal negotiations have been opened by the Fiji Government with the New Zealand Cabinet for the setting up of a trade commission, he continued. They hoped to so adjust their tariff in favour of New Zealand as to increase the imports. He hoped that it might be possible for New Zealand to extend to Fiji fruit the same concession in the matter of railway freights as is enjoyed by the fruitgrowers of New Zealand’s Pacific territories.

Mr. Nosworthy promised to discuss the representations with Cabinet.
