NO "POLICE PROTECTION"
LEAGUE RUGBY STIR A REPORT DENIED The following letter has been received from the secretary of the Auckland Rugby League Referees’ Association: — ‘ In view of the fact that a good deal of publicity has been given to one or two regrettable incidents on Carlaw Park last Saturday, would you kindly publish the fact that, at a meeting of my association last evening, a resolution was unanimously passed affirming the association’s full confidence in the referee, Mr. H. Taylor, who controlled the Devonport-Marist game.
“Furthermore, my association wishes to give an emphatic denial to the statement which has been widely circulated that Mr. Taylor received police protection. Certainly a few irresponsible partisans showed their disappointment of the result of the game in an unsportsmanlike manner by hooting, but the position was not such that police protection for Mr. Taylor was necessary. Many people would imagine that the situation was serious, but Mr. Taylor did not see a policeman from the time he left the ground until he arrived at the referees' dress-ing-room. It is unfortunate that a few irresponsibles should give a false impression not only as to Mr. Taylor’s refereeing, but, also, as to what transpired after the game.”
