VICTORIAN RAILWAYS

DEFICIT IN SPITE OF RECORD REVENUE By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 1 p.m. MELBOURNE, To-day. As the result chiefly of increased fares and freights, which became operative last year, the earnings of the Victorian railways for the financial year just ended amounted to £13,302,000. This was an increase of £975,000 over the previous year, and a record.

Despite this increase there is a deficit of £50,000 expected on the year’s operations. A similar deficit is expected from the tramways.—A. and N.Z.
