IN NIGHT ATTIRE

RESCUE FROM FIRE BLAZE AT LYTTELTON (.Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A thrilling rescue from fire was effected yesterday morning. Clad in her night clothes, Mrs. E. R. Curtis, of Lyttelton, was rescued from the roof of the verandah of her dwelling and shop. The fire did damage to the extent of several hundred pounds. The premises, a two-storeyed building in Canterbury Street, had a boot shop and fancy goods department on the ground floor. The fire originated in the sitting room at the rear of the building and spread to two upstairs bedrooms, which, like the sitting room, were practically gutted. Mrs. Curtis, who was alone in the house at the time, was aroused by the heat and dense volume of smoke, which almost suffocated her. She managed to crawl through the window on to the verandah, where her cries for help roused neighbours, who quickly rescued her. She was suffering greatly from shock.
