Trip To Be Made In October

COMMANDER Richard Byrd's latest plan is to fly to the South Pole. He hopes to set out in October, starting from the ice-field south of New Zealand. A new machine, which he proposes to build will pro bably be brought to New Zealand in September for final tests. Su Cable. —n-cM Association—Copy ujht

Reed. 11.30 a.m. LONDON, Sunday. The Paris correspondent of the “Sunday Times” says that Byrd has j definitely decided to make the South Pole flight, probably in October, start* j ing from the ice-field south of New Zealand. Noville and Balchin will ac-; company him. He is planning to have an exact! copy of the America built at Amsterdam in August. The new machine will probably be taken out to New 1 Zealand in September for final tests. On his return Belchen will organise a record transatlantic flight from New York to Oslo in the autumn of 1928, in a three-engined Fokker. Commander Byrd says the high winds in the Antarctic will necessi- j tate a three-engined machine for his forthcoming South Polar flight, which will be made at an average altitude of 10,000 feet. As a precaution, the plane will be accompanied by highspeed one-motor planers, which will be able to dash back for help if there should be a disaster.—A. and N.Z.
