STOLEN CAR IN MOUNT EDEN CRATER
A COMPLETE WRECK NOT content with stealing a car on Friday evening, the thieves apparently wilfully drove or pushed it over the crater at Mount Eden and wrecked it so badly that it was almost unrecognisable. The car belonged to Mr. B. Hart, and he d been lent by him to Mr. J. Hyam. of Stokes Road, Mount Eden. Some time on Friday evening it was removed from Wellesley Street, and was next heard of when the caretaker at Mount Eden reported that it was lying at the bottom of the crater. The face of the crater was strewn with bits of the car almost from the top. The hood was wrecked, two wheels torn off, all the bodywork in front of the front seat smashed right off the car, and what remained badly damaged. The caretaker of the park heard a car go up the mountain about 2.30 a.m. on Saturday, but did not hear it return. The ruined condition of the car. and the fact that no one was reported injured, indicates that the car went over with no passengers aboard.
