WAR FUNDS COUNCIL

MEETING IN WELLINGTON FINANCIAL POSITION Press Association. WELLINGTON, Thursday. The National War Funds Council met yesterday. The transfer of the funds of the Taranaki Provincial War Belief Association, amounting to £5,723 17s 10d, was formally approved. The operations of the Advisory Committee having commenced from October 4, it was resolved that before a pensioner is permitted to commute a pension to embark in business, the patriotic society responsible should be consulted so that inquiries could be made into the proposal with a view to seeing whether the venture had reasonable prospects of success. The executive was strengthened by the appointment of Mr. Harrison, general secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and Mr. Harper, a member of the Dominion executive of that body. In order to allow patriotic associations to render assistance to unemployment over and above the Poppy Day funds, it was decided to allocate £5,000 among the various patriotic societies. The balance-sheet showed an accumulated fund of £127,566 19s lid; relief totalled £4,509 5s 3d, made up as follows: ex-imperial, £1,699 15s 2d: N.Z.E.F., £1,318 16s 7d; overseas, £272 9s 3d; and the balance disbursements by the Advisory Committee. Seventynine bursaries have been accorded since 1919, a total expenditure of £8,091 19s Sd.
