Pola’s Marriage
“The Love of My Life ” Miss Pola Negri, the film actress, was married at Seraincourt, France, to the Georgian Prince Serge Mdivani, at the tiny village hall. She first had to present to the mayor of the village the decree of dissolution granted her by the Greek Church for her former marriage in 1919 with Count Domski. General Prince Mdivani, the last Tsarist Governor of Georgia, was the only relative from the bridegroom’s family present. Gendarmes, firemen, and local officials from villages for miles around guarded the roads and buildings, and the arrangements were almost as strict as for a royal procession. Streams of motor-cars blocked all the roads in the village, and scores of photographers struggled and fought with the crowd to get the best pictures of the bride and her husband. The ceremony, which was a civil one, was quickly over, and as the smiling couple emerged enthusiastic peasants let off sporting guns and rockets, to the alarm of many present. The bride’s wedding dress was of snow-white velvet, with a coat of white ermine. Her jewels consisted of pearls, diamond and emerald bracelets, and diamond rings.
