MEIKLE PETITION AGAIN

(From Our Resident Reporter.J WELLINGTON, Thursday. Compensation for seven years’ imprisonment and a ruined life is what John James Meikle, of Auckland, claims in a petition which has been before Parliament for many years past. Meikle was sentenced to a term of imprisonment for alleged sheep stealing in 1887, and was released after seven years of the sentence and declared innocent. Parliament has granted him certain sums, and he wishes for a further £5,000. Parliamentary committees previously recommended favourable consideration of the case.
