WHANGAREI NOTES
The second general meeting of the Whangarei Women's Civic League was held in the Methodist Hall yesterday. Mrs. J. E. Holmes took the chair, presiding over some 60 members. The matter of forming a beautifying society was gone into and Mrs. Staple said that money had been collected previously for this object. As no support was forthcoming from the Borough Council, however, the society fell through. Mrs. Holmes asked if someone could evolve a way to make people keep their front doors tidy, but some of the mem - bers seemed to think the suggestion was a hint, and no scheme was proposed. It was proposed to'ask the Borough Council to urge the Railway Department to prevent, as far as possible, advertisements being displayed on railway arches. However, it was not clear whether the council had any jurisdiction in the matter. Mrs. Briggs proposed that Mesdames Brainsby, Given and Harington be given power to ask the council what stand it would take if another beautifying society were formed. Mrs. Harington, who did not approve of this, withdrew from the proposed deputation. The motion was carried. Mrs. Holmes asked if anything could be done to prevent small children from selling tickets from door to door. Mrs. Murdoch proposed that a letter be sent to the Boy Scouts and the schools, urging their co-operation in the matter, and this was unanimously agreed to. Mrs. Briggs moved that a letter be sent to the National Women’s League, commending it on its move to try to prevent details of domestic court cases appearing in the Press. One member said she knew for a fact that a pressman in Whangarei had probed into a certain case, so as to publish the full facts.
