PALMERSTON PROGRESS

(From Our Own Correspondent.J PALMERSTON N., To-day. The remarkable progress enjoyed by the Borough of Palmerston North is reflected in the greatly increased revenue figures, the estimates for this year’s operations being set down at £ 200,000. The total is comprised as follow:—General account, £67,727; gas account, £44,761; electric light account £43,882; abattoir account, £14,810; waterworks account, £11,604; transit account, £8,250; sanitary account, £4,518; reserves account, £3,523; library account, £1,621. In the 1918-19 financial year the total revenue was £93,621 Is 7d, which strikingly illustrates the progress made by the town which now baosts a population of 20,480 inclusive of its urban area. For the month of June, up to noon on Thursday, building permits to the value of £7,460 were issued, such figure being the lowest monthly contribution for some considerable time. Altogether, 38 permits were issued, but in only two instances were they for buildings of the four-figure mark. Residences —five in all—represented £4.380 of the total. One permit which well might have been expected to have been included is that for the erection of a new Working Men’s Club of the value of £13,000, but this will presumably go to swell next month’s figures, the contract already having been let for the work.
