Costly Language. —For using obscene language in Exeter Street, Andrew Wilson was fined £5 in the Police Court this morning. Money for Unemployed. —Wellington collectors are actively engaged in gathering money for the unemployed fund. —Press Association. Unfit to Appear. —Richard Arnold Chaffey, who was unable to appear at the Police Court' this morning on account of sickness, was remanded for a fortnight on a charge of obtaining goods and money by means of a valueless cheque. Bridget’s £330,000. —The Rev. J. K. Archer, Mayor of Christchurch, says he has received dozens of letters from people named Madden in New Zealand, who claim to be heirs to Bridget Maddern’s £330,000, and “many of them,” he says, “have good records to substantiate their claims.” Football and Pedigree Sheep. —Jim Donald, captain of the Wairarapa Ranfurly Shield team, left this week for Sydney, where he will judge the Romney sheep at the Royal Show. The exAll Black expects that he will be able to arrive back home next Friday, the day before Wairarapa plays Hawke’s Bay for the shield at Master ton. Potato Disease. —The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. O. J. Hawken, has informed the House that regulations to be gazetted would provide against the introduction of potato disease. Shipments would have to be certified to by a responsible officer as clean and grown on clean country. Woman Dies of Injuries. —Serious injuries were received by Mrs. Pinfold, wife of the Rev. J. T. Pinfold, of Karori, on Tuesday evening, when she was knocked down by a motor-cycle. Her death occurred in hospital yesterday morning.
