Cancellation of English League Tour is Mooted
N.Z. Council to Negotiate With Australian Board of Control The first official intimation of the removal by the English Rugby League of the residential qualification on Dominion players was received at a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Rugby League held last evening. It was resolved to endorse the protest of the Australian Board of Control, to enter into negotiations with Australia on the question of the advisability of cancelling the English tour in 1928, and to withdraw the invitation extended to the English team to visit New Zealand. In speaking” to the motion, Mr. F. O'Conner said that for New Zealand to hold its players they should offer some inducement to them. If Australia pulled out from the English League and went with New Zealand, then our representative players could travel Australia about every three years. International matches could be played in both the Dominion and the Commonwealth, and both countries could cut adrift from England and still get along all right. NO TRANSFER FOR LOU BROWN A letter was received from Lou Brown, one of the players who was refused a transfer by the New Zealand Council, stating that he would esteem it a great favour if the council would now endeavour to have his transfer effected to the English League under the new conditions which now existed. It was decided that Lou Brown be notified that no provision had been made dealing with transfers overseas, and that as far as the council were concerned the rules had not been altered. Mr. Stallworthy strongly opposed the idea of the English League flouting New Zealand. He moved another motion to the effect that the Australian Board of Control be asked to receive a direct member of the New Zealand Council to discuss the action of the English League re the transfer rule and also other matters which would tend to unite Australia and New Zealand in closer organisation for the benefit of the Dominion. Various members stated that the position did not warrant that action and furthermore from a financial point of view it would be too much for them to undertake. The motion was defeated.
