MOTOR-VEHICLES CONTROL

FUNCTIONS OF P.W.D. MINISTER EXPLAINS Press Association. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Some misconception appears to exist in regard to the recent taking over of the control of motor vehicles by the Public Works Department. In a statement issued to-day the Minister of Public Works, Mr. K. S. Williams, said it was noted that the taking over of the administration of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924, by the Public Works Department, had led to the assumption, judging by various newspaper articles, that the department also proposed to take over the issue of drivers’ licences, collection of motor-lorry fees, and some of the other duties relating to motor vehicles at present devolving upon local authorities and their inspectors. This is not the case, said the Minister. The only change from the former situation is that in future, such motor vehicles as were previously attended to by the Internal Affairs Department will now be attended to bj’ the Public Works Department. The issue of licences and other duties will still be the function of the Post Office, as formerly.
