MISSED THE PICK
N.S.W. LEADING PLAYER NEW STAR RISES CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS The adage of the ugly duckling has been brought home to the New South Wales Golf Selection Committee. It chose its Kirk-Windeyer team and put It in the field; only to find out during subsequent events that It had overlooked the finest bird in the nest—in fact, two of them. One was E. L. Apperly, who, though mentioned, was not selected for the Kirk-Windeyer Cup, but afterwards proceeded to beat Ivo Wilson, the Melbourne leader, A. D. S. Duncan, the New Zealand leader, and eventually all those who met him, to win the N.S.W. amateur championship from the finest collection of golfers who have ever competed in the event. Better short than bunkered.
