It woujd be hard to define just what that elusive “something” is, that in brickwork creates such a sense of homeliness. But is is always there, nevertheless. The ideal, both from an aesthetic point of view and from the standpoint of utility and economy, is an all-brick home. But even a house built with wood can be wonderfully improved by the judicious introduction of plain or glazed bricks, for features such as pillars for porches, gate pillars and for chimneys.
