RAILWAY ELECTRIFICATION
AUCKLAND WILL BENEFIT When the Minister of Railways was recently reviewing the railway works to be put in hand, he stated that it was the intention of the Government to go ahead with the electrification of the south suburban line out of Auckland. This is a subject of great interest to people who may be thinking of building a home in the outer suburbs. Districts that can be reached at present only by a long tram journey, or by railway, and for that reason have been ruled out, should now be reconsidered. The electric railways in Melbourne have been the means of opening up quite large areas previously undeveloped, because access was made easy and pleasant. A run-out in an electric tram,, smokeless, and travelling smoothly at 60 miles an hour, is a very different thing from strap-hanging in a crowded tram, or a journey, however short, by the ordinary steam railway. It is to be hoped that the provision of more electric schemes will hasten the approach of the electric railway.
