PARIS PRISON HOAX
SEARCH FOR M. DAUDET GAOL DIRECTOR DISMISSED By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright PARIS, Suuday. A widespread search has failed to locate M. Leon Daudet, who was released from prison yesterday as the result of a hoax perpetrated by the Royalist friends of the author-journ-alist. His rearrest has been ordered. In the meanwhile France’s big laugh has turned to amazement at the success of the hoax. It has caused more trouble in Government circles than any other recent happening. Officials are wondering to w hat extent Royalist and Communist propaganda has penetrated into the administration. A drastic inquiry is being held. The most unhappy man in Paris is the director of the gaol, M. Catry, who has been dismissed within four months of his retirement on a pension. The new Prefect of Police, M. Chiappe, has also been stripped of the laurels he won a fortnight ago by his dramatic arrest of M. Daudet. —A. and N.Z.
