NOTED SCIENTIST DEAD
DR. EUGENE HAANEL By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright OTTAWA, Sunday. The death has occurred of Dr. Eugene Haanel, aged 86. Deceased was formerly Director of the Canadian Department of Mines. He was known throughout the world as a smeltingexpert.—A. and N.Z.-Sun. The late Dr. Eugene Emil Richard Haanel was born at Breslau, Silesia, on May 24, 1841. He went to the United States in 1556 and served in the Federal army during the civil war. He became professor of modern languages at Adrian College, Michigan, in 1864, and held the same post at Hillsdale College in the following year. From 1867-70 he was professor of natural science at Albion College, and from 1872-90 filled the same chair at Victoria University, Coburg, Ontario. While he was there he built and equipped Faraday Hall. Dr. Haanel became Director of the Canadian Department of Mines in 1907. He had in 1901 visited Europe as a Royal commissioner to inquire into the processes employed in the smelting of iron ores and the manufacture of steel. Before his retirement a few years ago he was known as one of the most abl€: practical and theistic scientists living.
