GETTING OFF!

If anyone asked me what type of girl gets off best with men I should certainly say the little girl—the girl who stands five foot and not much more!

And I am sure I know the reason for this —it is that a man likes to feel his manhood emphasised when he is with a woman. The little girl makes him appear six foot four in contrast when he is only five foot eight, and. besides, in every male heart there is a deeply rooted longing to have someone to rely on him—in fact, to take care of some girl—just as. in every woman’s heart, there is a longing to mother some helpless little child.

Put unkindly, the little girl makes him feel superior; put nicely, it makes him feel protective. Then, next to her. though it may astonish you, I should put the girl with slightly protruding teeth. Not enormous fangs that stick out a mile, but teeth that just come forward a tiny bit and lift the upper lip. They give such an eager expression and they have a babyish effect. And I can only say I have always noticed a girl with teeth of this type gets on remarkably well.

EXPRESSION VERSUS BEAUTY So you see I do not think very much of regular beauty. I put expression first every time.

Of course, big eyes are a great asset —but big eyes are not very much use in a big face—they must be allied to small features, and then they are entrancing. If, by any chance, they are blue and their owner's hair is black, or they are brown and her hair is yellow, then hearts simply smash all round her in dozens..

Figure, of course, counts: but I do not think it if a girl is thin or fat as long as she is in proportion. But talking of legs, I am sur3 thick ankles hardly matter a scrap. What does matter is if her stockings are not taut! TAKE CLOTHES *, I am certain crowds of girls owe their success to nothing but the colours in which they array themselves—a wine-coloured frock or pink hat has made many a heart beat faster when its owner would have had a fit had he suspected it! Drab shades are always depressing, especially to a man who is, after all, a primitive soul! And then there is manner—which is the outcome of personality. Now, I have a fond notion that far too many girls never fully develop their personality. They have nothing to “bring them out”; they remain for ever-in the chrysalis state. And while, of course, any hint of hysteria is fatal, when it comes to moods, if they are reasonable, why, as far as men go, they are all to the good. VIVACITY IS IMPORTANT The gayer a girl is the more she will be admired, vivacity is the most important thing, but it should not be continual; in fact, to put it plainly, if you are in a rage do not hide the fact. But do not sulk, and, above all, do not ever be too anxious to please anyObstinacy is a mistake, and any hint of hardness or catty ness is to be deplored; but patient Griselda would not cut much ice, I am sure, if she returned to-day. And try and get over shyness if it afflicts you. Far too many men are shy for a girl to be able to indulge in that complaint. ART AT THE WINDOW CHOOSING CURTAINS (By PAULINE BOUCHIER.) Perhaps the most delightful curtains to be found among this seasons stock are of silk net. Certainly there are any amount of silky varieties, plain nets, and patterned nets, in solid colour, a vogue for which women show a great affection just now. Cretonne curtains are almost the only ones permitted to display a medley of colours. Large and small windows are appropriately curtained with the same nets. Beautiful' nets, shaded with many tones of one colour, have a regal appearance behind the long windows of big houses, but they are considered pretty when decorating the more tastefully built villas. A really charming scheme for a villa, shdwn in a model house at a city store, is the use of a cretonne, which has a clear pattern, principally in light green, as side curtains, with a green silk net hanging flat between. A magnificent valance of green silk embroidered with gold is the charming finish to this window decoration. CROCHET WORK A simple design of silk crochet work is not so heavy as it may sound, and is another of this season’s favourites. For curtains to draw across the windows at night there are any number of shot taffetas, as well as plain taffetas. In purple or a rich red colour they make imposing and delightful curtains to the long windows. So far as colours are concerned, and this is a most important feature of windows in houses, large and small, orange is a popular sunshine tint, but blue in all its shades appears to be a serious rival. Blue is creeping into outside house decorations. It is seen on newlypainted woodwork, especially on the doors, and curtains, to match the woodwork give a most pleasing uniformity to the outside of the house. FRAGILE DRAPERIES There are lovely store curtains in the big shops in mosquito net, particularly cream, which are adorned with coloured applique work, conventional apples, and roses often appearing in the same design. Ecru curtains of flounced net are sometimes bordered with heavy filet lace, and here the machine products prove to be exceeding"- good imitations of the hand-made laces. Some really magnificent panel curtains designed for a bay window are being exhibited in town. But a filet mesh, they consist of a broad centre panel, patterned with a cleai\ bold design, and narrow side paneis repeating the same design, but necessarily on a much slighter scale. It is not easy to say which curtains are to be most popular this summer, but it is indicated that novelty curtains of highly coloured voiles, "in eccentric shapes, are being replaced by by more durable curtains of net, cretonne, and filet lace. If the plug of the sink is lost, a pickle-bottle cork with a piece of cloth wrapped around it will make an excellent temporary substitute. Rub the hands with dry salt after having had them in water for a length of time, then rinse and dry them thoroughly and they will keep smooth and white. If cork bath-mats, etc., are rubbed with a little methylated spirit their appearance will be improved. Every woman who laKcs a pride in personal appearance will recognise in Stamford's Salons their individual requirements will receive professional and careful attention In Permanent Waving.
