FIGHT FOR A FLAG
SOUTH AFRICAN BILL AN AMENDMENT CARRIED By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 9.40 a.m. CAPETOWN, Mon. The Senate carried the second readIng of the Flag and Nationality Bill; but a committee amendment was moved making a new design, giving the Union Jack and the two former Republican flags one quarter each, the remaining quarter to be occupied by four stars on an azifre field, representing the four provinces in the Union. The Jack has the top left-hand corner. The Government’s flag had the same arrangement on a small shield in the centre of the old Holland flag. The Government Is In a minority in the Senate, and General Hertzog (Prime Minister) resisted the new design, declaring that the Union Jack had a position of dominance, and that the Dutch would never accept it. The Senate carried the amendment, and the Bill will now be referred to the Assembly for the latter’s concurrence. —A. and N.Z.
