CARLTON BOWLERS RETAIN EDWIN STARS
GREY LYNN DEFEATED A BIG WIN On Saturday afternoon, on the Carlton green, an excellent Grey Lynn team. comprising Baildon. Little, Buckley and Whittle. played the holders of the Edwin Stars—Carlton— Bates. Cooke, Kilgour and Fookes. However, the challengers wore not in good bowling form, and a poor game resulted in a big loss to them. Whittle, who usually gives a splendid display of firm shots and driving, was frequently missing throughout the game, while Buckley who can always be relied upon for good solid bowling, made a decidedly poor and ineffective showing. Little, as No. 2. was just as much off his game as his Xo. 3 and skip. Baildon did some rather good leading, and gave his opposing lead good contests for shots up. On the other hand, the Carlton team played as strong a game as the previous Saturday, when it won the Stars from Fraser’s Mount Eden team. Fookes was even in better form than on the previous occasion. On the eight head, he made a most telling and difficult shot. He was lying one up. with a Grey Lynn bowl, that was snugly covered from a drive, keeping him out of a further four, and which left only the firm draw to displace. He played this wonderful shot with pleasing and wonderful accuracy, notching the possible five for his team. Kilgour gave his usual skilled and experienced exhibition of bowling. His strength and judgment was particularly noticeable in the game. Deare, who played so well in the previous game,. was replaced by Cooke. The latter proved undoubtedly a worthy substitute. He accomplished some sterling work throughout the game. Bates seemed to have the knack of rising to the cal! of his skip when the latter demanded from him the shot up. but he had a doughty opponent in Baildon. THE GAME The Grey Lynn team led up to the sixth head by 6—3, when Fookes scored his splendid five, mentioned above. After then, however, the challengers fell away in play, and only scored a further 8. , Carlton had the game well in hand on the 14th head,227,0 —7, and were content to prevent tall scoring by the opposition. The game finished on the 20th head —24 —14 —a big victory for the holders.
