Possible Clue to Murderer Found
DISCOVERY AT BURWOOD BLOODSTAINED OVERCOAT (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. A short distance from the spot where Gwendoline Scarff’s body was found last Wednesday week, City Council workmen, who were engaged cutting scrub, came upon a blood-srneared military overcoat rolled up under a gorse bush. There was a big patch of blood down one side of the coat, and more stains on the sleeves. The coat, which would lit a man of medium height, may prove a valuable clue, for the stains showed the marks of a hand. The coat was handed over to the police, who are continuing their search of the surrounding scrub in the hope of finding the dead girl’s handbag and purse, which are missing. Another clue, in the shape of bloodstained rag, similar to a piece of cheese cloth, was discovered by a reporter and handed to the police. The men who found the coat were employed under the employment rftief scheme clearing one of the reserves at Bottle Lake. The bush under which it was found is near the corner of New Brighton and Bottle Lake Roads.
