FACTORS AFFECTING CHEESE PRICES
TARANAKI MAN’S VIEWS INFLUENCE OF BEEF WAR (Special to THE SUN.) WANGANUI, Saturday. The special reason for cheese being so low in price at Home is attributed by Mr. J. B. Richards, chairman of the Stratford Dairy Company, to the meat war at present in progress in the Old Country. First quality beef is being sold as low as 21d a lb, said Mr. Richards, and if people can get meat so low they will not buy cheese in any quantity. It only wants the war to stop, he said, for cheese prices to rise. It was reported that the people engaged in the war were losing at the; rate of £10,000,000 a year. While Lord Vestey had a long purse, however, this could not be drawn on at such a rate for a*iy length of time. The farmers, Mr. Richards thought, were justified in anticipating some arrangement between the contesting parties before long, which should bring about a better price for cheese.
