ENGLISH GIRL’S WIN WILD EXCITEMENT By Cable.—Press Association Copyright LONDON, Friday. Seldom has such an enthusiastic scene been witnessed at Wimbledon as when Miss Betty Nuthall, the 16-year-old English girl, defeated Mrs. Molla Mallory, the American Champion. The spectators went almost wild with excitement. I\,TISS NUTHALL won the game of her life. The victory of the English girl was the more remarkable owing to her indifferent display in the first set, in which her famous drive was kept under control. After that her speed of stroke and her court-craft overwhelmed Mrs. Mallory. Absolutely winning strokes flashed down the line, leaving the American helpless. In the second set Betty quickly led 6 —-1. Though Mrs. Mallory scored another game Miss Nuthall took the set with a smash. In the final set. Miss Nuthall gave a marvellous display. Mrs. Mallory was not playing up to form, and the English girl won most of the games with her powerful back-hand cross-court strokes. After the match Miss Nuthall said: “I did not expect to win. It was a great surprise to me. I thought Mrs. Mallory would beat me after the first set. Even when I had a lead I had a feeling she would catch up.” Mrs. Mallory said: “I was ready for it. Miss Nuthall played a wonderful game. “The sympathies of the onlookers were obviously with the child. It was like playing 1,000 people instead of one.” Results: MEN’S SINGLES Fourth Round Tilden defeated Boussus, 6—l, 7—6, 6—2. Brugnon defeated Kingsley, 4—6, 6—3, 6 — 2, 6 — 2.
