WELLINGTON’S EFFORTS FOR UNEMPLOYED
NO OVERLAPPING A PERMANENT COMMITTEE Press Association. WELLINGTON, Friday. What has been done by the various local bodies in the Wellington district in meeting the unemployment problem was outlined at a representative conference held to-day for the purpose of setting up a permanent committee, having for its principal object the coordination of efforts and the eliminatiori of overlapping. The Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, saic that over 800 men were unemployed in Wellington. The City Council had engaged 250 men on relief, paying 14s a day for A class men and 12s a daj r for B men. Lower Hutt had absorbed all its married unemployed. The Social Welfare Committee had dealt with 81 cases on Tuesday, 41 of whom were mar_ied. Petone had found employment for 70, and hoped to place another 40. There were 170 unemployed in Petone. The Public Works Department had placed 86 men during the last 10 days and the prospects of placing more were not bright. Very few young girls were unemployed, but a fair number of elderly women were seeking work.
