SOUP-KITCHEN AND DOSS-HOUSE
WILL GOVERNMENT ACT?
QUESTION BY MR. PARRY
(.From Our Resident Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Friday. TN view of the widespread distress * and the institution of a soupkitchen and doss-house at Auckland, due to continued unemployment, Mr. W. Parry, Auckland Central, wishes to know what steps the Prime Minister proposes to take to relieve the situation. THE necessity, for these institutions. _ says Mr. Parry, has not been in evidence for more than a quarter of a century. The Minister of Labour, Hon. G. J. Anderson, replied to this question in the House to-day, and said that the
Government’s activities, in dealing with unemployment were well known. Local bodies were being assisted by subsidy. Mr. Parry: Is that on the basis of 9s and 12s a day? Mr. Anderson: Yes; that has been outlined. Mr. Parry: Are the councils compelled to pay these wages? Mr. Anderson: Well, they can pay what they like, but that is the basis of the Government subsidy.
