AN INNINGS WIN

NEW ZEALAND BEATS NORTHUMBERLAND

RICH HARVEST FOR SLOW BOWLERS

VISITORS’ GOOD FIELDING

By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright DEFEAT by an innings and three runs was inflicted on Northumberland by the New Zealand cricketers. The slows of Merritt and Blunt, and the fine fielding of the visitors, especially Dempster and Oliver, was responsible for the downfall of the county batsmen.

Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. When play was resumed yesterday morning, the county’s first innings was continued by the two not out men, Bruce (33) and Stanger-Leathes (5). Bruce had added 10 to his score when he was caught off Cunningham by Oliver. Stanger-Leathes carried his score to 51, and was then bowled by Blunt. Pritchard carried his bat for a fine 103. He batted for three hours, and hit 17 fours. Northumberland’s defensive play was not successful in averting an inning’s defeat. The New Zealanders fielded splendidly, particularly Dempster and Oliver. The batsmen were unable to master the slows of Blunt and Merritt. The attendance was 2,000. When play ended, Northumberland had lost two wickets for 79. Details: NEW ZEALAND First Innings R. C. Blunt, c Bruce, b Maconachie 195 C. S. Dempster, b Hetherton . . 29 M. L.
