OPOTIKI HOSPITAL
ALTERATIONS APPROVED OPOTIKI, To-day. Dr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, visited Opotiki yesterday at the invitation of the Opotiki Hospital Board and discussed additions to the hospital costing £1,000; also the installation of an X-ray outfit and room,’estimated to cost between £I,OOO and £1,500. Dr. Valintine stated that the Government had very little money to spend on hospitals. Since the beginning of the year he had refused additions to various hospitals amounting to £250,000. New Zealand was better catered for in the matter of hospitals than any other part of the world. Recently he visited France, America, Switzerland and England and inquired into their different systems. America was “cracked up,” but their hospitals catered only for two classes of people, the rich and the poor. The middle-class was left out American hospitals charged eight dollars a day against New Zealand’s charge of 9s a day. Later in the day Dr. Valintine visited the hospital and expressed pleasure at the capable management of the institution. Finally he approved of the proposed alterations and additions and also the installation of the X-ray plant.
