IN THE MARKET PLACE
ORANGES PLENTIFUL ONIONS DEARER Oranges at the present juncture o_re a glut on the market. The Waipahi’s 17,000 cases from the Cook Islands arrived in a condition necessitating a large percentage being offered for immediate sale to highest bidder. Prices ranged from 8s to 11s for cases containing very little waste. Cases of badly deteriorated sorts sold for considerably less. The repacks are sweet and palatable and making only up 14s a case. One thousand cases of Cook Island tomatoes were also included in the Waipahi’s shipment. These made from 9s to 12s. Ex the Sydney boat this week consignments of pines, oranges, mandarins, and passions came to hand, most all in fair order and condition. Pines made from 9s to 20s a case, according to size, mandarins, not in the best of condition, made low values selling from 9s to 13s a case, passions made from 9s to 12s a case. Apples and pears are hard to quit and meeting with a very slow demand. In the field and garden produce section, cauliflowers are plentiful. Most other varieties of vegetables are also well supplied. Onions are firmer. In the poultry pens good table birds are keenly sought after, though inferior sorts meet with weak sale and are hard to quit. Limited offerings of young ducks are coming forward and competition for these birds is keen.
