RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM

ACTING” Marshall Neilan's Paramount comedy drama, “Everybody’s Acting,” nowbeing shown at the Rialto and Regent Theatres, offers fresh proof that the more enlightened of our movie directors are adopting the laudable practice of telling the story with as few sub-titles as possible. In this new Neiian production, for example, the story begins in 1908 and ends in 1926. In the old days this lapse of time would have been bridged by the use of some such hackneyed phrase as “18 Years Later.” Neiian has wisely chosen to indicate the change of time through the use of clever make-up on the part of the players. In the opening scenes the role that is later portrayed by Betty Bronson is depicted by an infant of six months. Ford Sterling. Raymond Hitchcock. Henry Walthall, Stuart Holmes and Edward Martindel, the five foster fathers who adopt the baby, are all young men. When the girl has reached the age of five there is visual evidence that the fathers have aged slightly. W'hen the girl is 18, it is easy to tell from the appearance and actions of the five men that they have become quite old. Holmes has lost all his hair. Sterling, Hitchcock and Walthall are grey at the temples. Martindel, who in his prime had boasted of curly brown hair, is now the possessor of silver locks and moustache to match.
